How to report a Back Door Roth IRA Contribution

The custodian will most likely report the backdoor Roth contribution with the amount included in Box 2a of the 1099-R “Taxable Amount”. Box 2b “Taxable amount not determined” will also typically be checked but nowhere on the form will it indicate that this is in fact a backdoor Roth contribution or a distribution ofnon-deductible IRA basis. This can cause confusion for the taxpayer and their tax preparer if you are not clearly communicating what happened.
